Hallo!

First of all... as you can see... I'm back again :-).

A lot of you guys are using localized (non-english) versions of painkiller. This makes it sometimes hard for others to understand screenshots published in forums and messageboards (like level stats etc.). I've discussed about this with various people before (e.g. Varus), because there were some hints that led me to the conclusion, that every painkiller version contains all languages. Would be nice to be able to switch between these languages, would it? Unfortunately, the language-setting in the config file is ignored. So I took a look into this, and here's what I've got for you:

After installing these modifications (detailed readme included), you're able to set the language using the above mentioned config parameter. Since the affected file has been changed in every patch version, you have to pick the right download. Version 1.3 is not supported, because I don't think anyone should use it at all.

Here's a screenshot of my (german) painkiller version after learning russian, for example:

Or czech:

and so on... enjoy!

Oh... please post your experiences, plz. This should definately work with german and english painkiller versions (tested by a friend of mine and myself), but since I don't know anybody with other language versions I'm not sure about them.

P.S.: I hope no legal issues are involved with that... just changed a few lines in a script file...

Btw... if anyone is interested in doing another localization... this is also possible with little effort. No existing languages would be harmed by such modifications. Look at this screenshot with a partly translated version of painkiller (franconian):

What's the trick? (if it's legal to tell)

I'd like to make Icelandic one.

  • 作者

That's funny! Damn I always wonder how you guys manage to do this

What about a chinese/japanese menu?

There's no trick. All strings in the game are outsourced to language files (just like a good programmer would do), so basically what you have to do is translating this file to your desired language. But be warned... we are talking about ~750 lines of text here :-).

I don't know about Icelandic, you have to find out which text encoding has to be used, too. If you are serious about this, I'll send you an english template to translate ;-).

750 lines?

Then I doubt I´m serious about this but I can try.

Do you want my email? (how big is the file btw?)

There you go :-). Just take a look into it if you want...

Do I now just translate every single English word in the file?

Do I now just translate every single English word in the file?

Yep.

It has to fit into the context of course, which is sometimes a bit hard (because often you don't really know where the string is used exactly), but that's what you basically would do.

And where do I put this file when done?

(sorry, I´m a total beginner when it comes to files locations)

There has some editing to be done in another script file so that your language file can be used.

That would be "languages.lua" (LScripts/Main). Search for the entry "Cfg:Load()". There you have to add a new elseif-path for your language file.

You may also send me your translated file, I can do that for you and give you a ready-to-use package...

  • 作者

Sure.

And thanks for your help.

I can do that path thing myself, I´ve done that before with INI files to make something work.

I'll be done before May 2006.

I am using the spanish language(it's my native language) and some parts in the tarot cards requeriments are "wrong" for example when it tell you to beat a boss it says for example "Beat Guardian in under MM:SS" I am fixing it by adding the time instead of leaving it with a MM:SS.

  • 作者

Done.

Here's the file.

Since I don't know if you were able to integrate this file, here's the corrected language.lua.

Just put it (together with your language file) into the folder

[painkiller directory]\Data\LScripts\Main

You can choose icelandic by setting up your config file:

Cfg.language = "icelandic"

I don't understand a single word, so it seems to work.

  • 作者

Well, I fixed the typos and errors in the spanish translation of the game. . Here's the file. I have tried it and it works. Just do what the Readme says.

If it doesn't work then tell me.

  • 作者

I can't because of 2 reasons:

1) This doesn't work.

I put Cfg.lua and changed the language string

I put Languages.lua and everything seems to be correct in there

I put Lang_Icelandic.txt but the menu is still english.

Location is /Data/LScripts/Main

2) The menu is f**ked up because of my dad´s old video card.

  • 作者

1.) Config entry:

Cfg.Language = "icelandic"

2.) Your language file (Lang_Icelandic.txt) in

[painkiller]\Data\LScripts\Main

3.) My language fix (Cfg.lua) in

[painkiller]\Data\LScripts\Main

4.) My adjusted Language.lua (see above) in

[painkiller]\Data\LScripts\Main

5) The result:

So? :-/

  • 作者

I put Cfg.lua and changed the language string

Maybe that's the reason.

You don't have to change anything in cfg.lua!

  • 作者

Ok, now I'm confused. You wrote"Cfg.Language = "icelandic""

But that's in Cfg.lua.

Is there another file than Language.lua that I should edit?

I think the best way would be telling me in steps what to do after I've put the 3 files into the Main directory, let's say I haven't edited anything yet.

So what do I do?

Ok, once again ;-)

1.)

First you have to edit your config.ini file. You'll find it in

[painkiller]\bin

Search for the line that says

Cfg.language = "[some language]"

and replace the part between the double quotes with icelandic.

2.) If it doesn't exist, create the directory

[painkiller]\data\LScripts\Main

and copy the following files into this folder

Cfg.lua (=> from my fix)

Languages.lua (=> see some postings above)

Lang_Icelandic.txt (=> your own language file)

That's it!

You don't have do to any other changes. Be sure that no hidden file extensions are added to any of those files (like Languages.lua.txt).

HTH

P.S.: check for upper and lower case spelling, because the config entry (for example) is case sensitive.

  • 作者

Hi kalme:

I according to method of you, it can't show Chinese still, retreat out as me of the game, I find Cfg. Language = " chinese " becomes Cfg.Language again = " english ", does not PK support Chinese ? I try of Lang _ Chinese.txt changes into Lang _ English.txt, but still can't show Chinese, can you help me to check? I do not have this file of Cfg.lua, is this file essential?

  • 作者

Hi!

Your edited version of Language.lua is perfect. But the file Cfg.lua is essential, because it overrides the default language selected by the game (depending on the cd label) to that one of the config file. Just download the zip file linked above and follow the instructions of the readme.txt.

By using the correct cfg.lua and your language.lua + Lang_Chinese.txt, I get the following result, though:

Not quite chinese, because I don't think the game's font supports these characters... :-(

Sorry.

  • 作者

You can change the font which is called Gothicum, and download Windows Language Chinese Pack or whatever, and then the characters should work. I'll see if I can get it working later.

  • 作者

Yes, I was playing around with the fonts.pak after my posting, too. It's not the Gothicum font, but the timesbd.ttf. Here's how to do it:

Create a folder

[Your Painkiller folder]\data\fonts

Copy any true type font you want to use for the menu into that folder and rename it to

timesbd.ttf

Done :-)

Result (for example):

So if you've got a font supporting chinese characters...

  • 作者

I have already done according to your method , but it still can't show, does not it really support Chinese ?
